ABSTRACT

The three novels reviewed below are Mrs. Stowe's Dred: A Tale of the Great Dismal Swamp (1856); Charles Reade's It is Never Too Late to Mend: A Matter of Fact Romance (1856); and Hertha (1856), by the Swedish novelist Fredrika Bremer. The 'Belles Lettres' section of which these reviews form a part was finished, according to George Eliot's Journal, on 19 September, and appeared in the same number of the Westminster containing her 'Silly Novels by Lady Novelists'.
