ABSTRACT

Clusters promote the fullest development of the potential of the maritime sector, with their emphasis on cross-industry linkages and complementarities. Some clusters focus on single geographic regions, often around a major port, while others are multicentred, bringing together expertise and experience from several coastal sites, often across national boundaries. The maritime industries throughout Europe contribute to the wellbeing of all Europeans as the volume of transportation is determined by the world trade of goods. Maritime cluster organizations aim to enhance the strength of the maritime cluster. By definition, maritime cluster organizations capture more than one maritime sector. The theoretic benefits of a cluster can be achieved through the activities of maritime cluster organizations. The maritime clusters in the Baltic Sea region are facing various new challenges. In the future, the Central Baltic region (CBR) maritime cluster will need the support of the government, but this support should not be provided automatically.
