ABSTRACT
This is an alias for Protection. The experience of Protection in Britain was so bitter that the word Protection came to be shunned. Consequently every time that an attempt has been made to revive Protection in this country it has been called by another name. In the seventies the word used was " Reciprocity." In the eighties the name "Fair Trade" was adopted. At the end of the nineteenth century the term " Tariff Beform " was thought of. All over the world, however, the thing denoted by these names is called Protection, and the fact that British Protectionists are afraid to use the name is very significant.
