ABSTRACT

The presence of so many neolithic implements suggests that neolithic man was widely scattered over Western Europe, and that no great change has taken place to cover up the remains of his industry. The full neolithic industry followed the development suggested by this early industry, and added or developed what may be described as saws, knives and spear-heads. The neolithic celt, seen in its earliest form in the Campignian industry, possesses all the essentials of a modern axe but one. Neolithic man also invented the use of pottery. There is beginning to be evidence of pottery in earlier times, but with the neolithic period its use becomes abundant and diverse. The most remarkable of the neolithic dwellings are probably of rather a later date, namely, the pile-dwellings or palafittes.
