ABSTRACT

This chapter describes the power of Intellectual Property (IP) tools, such as trademarks, licensing, and geographical indications. It also describes how Intellectual Property tools and effective positioning require support, advocacy, education, and enforcement as well. The chapter illustrates the value and criticality of collective, support organizations with historical examples of success. It explains the role of power and collective advocacy, and describes the purpose and vision of the African IP Trust, a support organization. The chapter also explains how support organizations should be formed for new entrepreneurial businesses. It discusses the role of education and a model for a curriculum for stakeholders, exporters, and governments. The chapter presents an interview with Attorney Dick Wilder, Associate General Counsel of the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, and former Director of the Global Intellectual Property Issues Division of the World Intellectual Property Organization.
