      ABSTRACT

This conclusion presents some closing thoughts on the concepts covered in the preceding chapters of this book. The book discusses the basic information regarding mental and behavioral health history, design theories, building typologies, research, and guidelines. Proximity and collocation of mental health clinics and primary health centers will require research and innovation. Design should be able to support the flexibility required for integration. According to T. Bewley, practice trends include: the increasing importance of the biological nature of psychiatric research, the expanding influence of users, the increase in the number of clinical guidelines, and the transitions in culture and dynamics that change social behavior. Bewley's statement regarding the increased participation of clients and patients in the process of treatment is an interesting one and parallels trends in the design process that embrace the contributions and advice of all building occupants.
