ABSTRACT

This depends on the role you have negotiated with the teacher. It could be that you are there to give general assistance in a lesson, in which case you will work with any pupil or group of pupils as directed by the teacher, or as you see the need. Many teaching assistants (TAs) are asked to work with groups of pupils and some with individual pupils. Even if you are giving general support to a curriculum area, the pupils you are most likely to work with and who will need additional support will fall into the following categories:

They have identified special educational needs.

They have identified medical needs.

They are entitled to the Pupil Premium (additional funding for disadvantaged pupils).

They have short-term needs (e.g. pupils whose first language is not English).
