ABSTRACT

This chapter explores the barriers in affirming and advocating for work–family balance needs amid the added element of balancing LGBTQ identity. It considers workplace cultures of sexuality, decisions regarding disclosure, and contradictions on workplace policy and culture. The United States has seen a variety of wins and losses for the LGBTQ community. As of June 26, 2015, gay marriage is legal and recognized in all fifty states and as of June 30, 2016, transgender Americans can serve in the military. Just as legislation can improve how LGBTQ working adults feel about their sexual orientation and gender identities at work, national news stories and memes circulating on social media sites can lend to the visibility of LGBTQ issues. Advocacy can come in the form of rallying for work–family balance benefits that are more flexible and have a higher potential to benefit a greater number of people.
