ABSTRACT

One of the assumptions of solution-focused brief therapy(SFBT) is that clients are the experts on their own lives; the child is the expert of his own life, and the parent the expert on the family. Solutions are created out of the unique context of each child's life. Creating a game and naming the problem Accident gave Andrew a dignified way to build solutions and beat Accident. Following a child's lead in shrinking problems and growing solutions asks us to listen carefully to their interests, games, and metaphors, to meet their imaginary friends and to learn about super heroes. Working with children and families is exciting work because children are so creative and successful when they are acknowledged as their own expert and given a chance to discover their own solutions. Whether it is pee-power, Miracle Fruit, or Bowser's Castle, children have the ability to creatively build solutions for their own lives and situations.
