ABSTRACT

Trauma touches the lives of children just as it does the lives of adults. The reality that the brain is malleable is of great consequence in trauma treatment. In pathology-based forms of therapy or trauma debriefing, the emphasis may be on reliving or retelling the event. Concentrating on the trauma may inadvertently further traumatize our clients. In addition to the biology and capabilities of the brain, we should view solution-focused trauma therapy in light of the possibilities of successful outcomes and potential growth. Not all children need to talk about trauma that they have experienced. When they do want to explore what happened, it is important to talk about it in a way that honors and builds on past and present strengths, resources, and coping abilities. Often times when a child experiences a traumatic event, it is in a location they will have to be in again. sleeping in the same bedroom where the abuse happened.
