ABSTRACT

Chapter 9 explores the link between divine providence and the impulse towards self-preservation that is present in animals and human beings at birth. It shows that oikeiôsis or familiarization with oneself is part of an elaborate plan by god to ensure the preservation of the particular natures that are parts of the world. The chapter provides an in-depth analysis of Stoic oikeiôsis and explains what roles it plays in self-preservation.
