ABSTRACT

The physically handicapped child is much more at risk from ill-fitting furniture. Caring for a handicapped child can be tiring and time-consuming, so it is important to try to reduce the demands of household chores. Most mothers express anxieties about housekeeping standards, tidiness being a continuing problem. Electrical flexes should be fastened to the wall, using insulated staples or cable clips. The small baby and the child with little or no mobility spend a lot of their time in living room as spectators. The physiotherapist should be asked to suggest a timetable for this as the needs of all handicapped children vary. There are several aids which the handicapped child can use to make him independent in the lavatory, for example a sturdy platform, grab rails or a support such as the Mechanaids Toilet Aid. Cindico also makes a trainer seat which has a back and a harness. The Crossland toilet seat stands over the lavatory and gives maximum support.
