ABSTRACT
Unconscious and silent about the U.S. history of settler colonialism, ignorant and mute about our crimes of chattel slavery and racial domination, neither governments nor citizens can seriously tackle climate injustice until we confront this 400-year history. 1 This is my thesis. It accuses the “me,” ever guilty and responsible, as we will find in Chapter 4 , but locates the problems in a shared historical and narrative unconsciousness, in a “we.” The thesis depends on history, culture, and psychoanalytic views of unconsciousness. Ambiguities remain. Let us nevertheless begin, contritely begging the help of those who can see what we cannot.
