ABSTRACT
Many of the great Highland families employed harpers. Indeed, from the early records which survive from the 15th century, and probably for some time before that, until the mid-17th century, it is clear that a harper would have been an accepted member in any household of rank. In these Gaelic-speaking areas of the north and west, the instrument used would undoubtedly have been the wire-strung clarsach.
