ABSTRACT
This chapter uses thirty translators’ accounts of their own approaches to their source texts and illustrates and annotates a process of translating a short text. It discusses a number of translations in which creativity has given way to censoriousness and compares the decisions made by the translators of these to what are arguably more creative choices. It highlights the variability of creative translations, and of the relationships between source text and translation that may be the outcome of aesthetically informed translating.
