ABSTRACT

A writer can present openly persuasive forms of written communication in several ways. This chapter explores how an organization can present opinion to its key publics. It explains how to apply concepts of issues management in various writing activities. The chapter outlines how to prepare and write advocacy pieces such as position statements, letters to the editor, op-ed commentaries and guest editorials, issue advisories, proclamations and petitions. Managing issues important to an organization is an ongoing process of research, analysis and communication. When organizations want to give their opinion on matters of public or organizational interest, they often issue a position statement. An official statement generally is a brief proclamation by an organization's leadership about a timely issue that involves the organization in some way. Public relations writers sometimes use a contingency statement, also called a stand-by statement, to prepare the organization for various potential situations. Issue advisories have many applications within organizations.
