ABSTRACT

This chapter presents the format and content of news releases for print media. The headline signals for the editor or news director the content of the release, and thus may attract attention to its contents. A dateline is an occasional element of a news release, featuring the name of the city or town where the release originates. Public relations writers often wish to give a particular strategic focus to a news release, particularly the lead. A benefit statement is the biggest difference between how a public relations writer prepares a release and how a journalist writes a news story based on the same information. Organizational identification is a paragraph with standard wording that routinely is dropped into a news release, usually at the end. Announcement release is a news release that provides information about a planned event. It covers various subcategories: event releases, personnel releases, progress releases, program releases, product releases, bad-news releases, crisis releases and financial releases.
