ABSTRACT

The repose in which the army was su ered to remain in Charlestown during the winter, and which the British fondly supposed was likely to continue, was soon interrupted in the following year, when Green succeeded Gates in the command of the continental troops. at spirit which they supposed was entirely quenched, was now rekindling in its ashes; and the execution of Colonel Haynes, attended with circumstances peculiarly a ecting, and which does not appear to have been justi ed by the proceedings of the court which tried him, raised these sparks into a ame, and reanimated every breast with fury and indignation. e corps in which Captain Rivers and Ned served were now sent upon duty, and the hour was approaching, which they had both long earnestly desired,/ of sharing the dangers and the glories of their countrymen.
