ABSTRACT

This chapter explains the complete course for beginners in Portuguese for self-study, using a practical and modern method. The purpose of the course is to provide the student with a sound base of conversational Portuguese in a relatively short period of time, sufficient to cope in general business situations. It consists of thirteen lessons containing dialogues, reading comprehensions and exercises covering essential grammar points and vocabulary. The dialogues and reading texts present grammar and vocabulary in a systematic manner and each lesson is built around everyday situations. The chapter provides a guide to pronunciation of consonants, diphthongs, stress, and accents. It also presents the English names of accents. Stress normally falls on the penultimate syllable, me sa and jane la, except when words end in ade, l, r or z and um or uns and when there is an accent, indicating where the stress should fall.
