ABSTRACT

The first email was sent from China as early as 1987, but the internet in China did not really begin to develop until the mid-1990s. According to the official statistics published by the China Internet Information Centre, the number of internet users in China was fewer than 40,000 in 1995, but that figure had leapt to more than 80 million by July 2004. The People's Daily is the number one official newspaper in China, known as Renmin Ribao. The paper is now online and there is both a Chinese version and an English version. The number one English newspaper in China is China Daily, aiming at English speakers living and working in China. Each province and city has its own local paper. This chapter presents some exercises on language translation where learners are encouraged to check unfamiliar words in the Chinese-English glossary.
