ABSTRACT

The dish of noodles in Chinese culture symbolises longevity. Traditionally, it is a must dish to mark a birthday. Some Chinese people take pains to ensure that each celebrant's full bowl contains a single unbroken noodle of considerable length. Dumplings are very popular in the north of China. They symbolise reunion as everything is wrapped in the middle. Therefore, when families and friends have meals together, dumplings are often on the table. Traditional Chinese breakfast is mostly savoury and filling, consisting of rice or corn porridge and steamed bread. These staples are often accompanied by salted duck eggs and any one of a wide variety of pickles. Sweet soya milk and deepfried dough sticks are also very popular. Nowadays, many young people have adopted Western-style breakfast, coffee and toast. In most big hotels in China, breakfast is served in both Chinese and Western styles.
