ABSTRACT

This chapter presents conversations in the Mandarin Chinese language based on common daily situations with their English translations. English translation enables to follow Chinese more closely. It presents few vocabularies and speech patterns in the Mandarin Chinese language with their English meanings. The chapter introduces the verb-suffix and new uses of the sentence particle. Verb-suffix is used, when an action took place at a point in the past, or when an action has to be completed before something else is done, irrespective of time setting. The verb has to be an 'action' verb, not a dispositional verb, and capable of definite termination. The aspectual significance of the sentence particle is that, the event marked tooks place before a certain point. This point might be the moment of speaking, but equally there might be no connection with the present. The chapter also introduces the Combination of verb-suffix and sentence particle.
