ABSTRACT

This chapter presents conversations in the Mandarin Chinese language based on common daily situations with their English translations. English translation enables to follow Chinese more closely. Some of the sounds of Mandarin Chinese are so similar to English sounds, they will present no difficulty for the learner. Others are less similar to sounds in English but have a close enough resemblance. It presents few vocabularies in the Mandarin Chinese language with their English meanings. The chapter discusses various speech patterns and grammar notes with appropriate English examples. Speech pattern includes sections such as Degrees of comparison, Intensifying complements, Predicative complements. Main advantages of this chapter are clear grammar explanations, lots of exercises for regular practice, Pinyin Romanization used throughout, Chinese-English glossary for quick reference. Expansion Drills gives confidence in building up longer and longer sentences in Chinese and increases fluency at the same time.
