The chapter offers the course content to anyone who wishes to acquire the ability to speak, understand, read and write basic Japanese for daily use. The Japanese language has two speech styles: the polite style and the plain style. The polite style is used in formal situations such as talking to a stranger or senior whereas the plain style is used in casual situations such as talking with a close friend. The chapter explains how to ask the meaning of an unknown word in Japanese. Katakana is used to transcribe words which are originally foreign words. Katakana is also used for the names of some animals and plants. One will learn the basic 48 katakana characters plus combined sounds and special sounds.
