ABSTRACT

This chapter describes the existence of things and people using arimasu and imasu. It lists more than two nouns by using ya and so on. The Japanese equivalents of the English there is/are are arimasu and imasu. The former is used for inanimate things or animate things which cannot move at will, whereas the latter is used for animate things. The chapter explains that Colloquial Japanese provides a step-by-step course in Japanese as it is written and spoken today. It offers a course content to anyone who wishes to acquire the ability to speak, understand, read and write basic Japanese for daily use. The Japanese language has two speech styles: the polite style and the plain style. The polite style is used in formal situations such as talking to a stranger or senior whereas the plain style is used in casual situations such as talking with a close friend.
