ABSTRACT

Once Frederick Tomlin Esqre had returned to Turkey and consulted with London, he decided to write to Eliot in general terms about a visit; and, in order to make clear that Tomlin knew Eliot was often pressed with such invitations and to demonstrate that Tomlin was not badgering him to the point of importunity, he reproduces the business part of the letter. Tomlin still did not despair of persuading Eliot and Valerie to come to Turkey, and, as Tomlin have said, Tomlin may have pressed him a little hard, as no doubt Tomlin underestimated his physical stamina. There is a slight note of reproach in his letter of 18 March 1959. Before returning to Turkey, Tomlin gave Eliot an account of my stay; and on 24 September 1959, he wrote me a letter which much reassured me, as the recipient of kindness and hospitality sometimes wonders whether he or she has managed to earn even a small part of it.
