ABSTRACT

Brazil, once one of the fastest growing tourism segments in the hospitality and tourism industries, has fallen into a deep recession that is having global implications. There are numerous macro-environmental factors that are directly contributing to Brazil’s economic recession. In order to better understand these factors, it is important to first understand the very nature of Brazil’s economy and how it contributes to global tourism. The World Travel and Tourism Council notes that Brazil’s recession is actually proving to be a driving force for Brazil’s tourism industry, domestically. China’s economic contraction has also led to dramatic decreases in imports from Brazil and has contributed to fuel corruption between Brazil’s major state-run oil company, Petrobas, and the Brazilian government. The biggest concern for Brazil in the near future is likely to be public opinion of the way they handle and potentially contain the outbreak.
