ABSTRACT

This conclusion chapter presents some closing thoughts of the concepts discussed in the preceding chapters of this book. The book talks about a story of different ways that race is recognised, reproduced and managed in everyday life. It has contributed a unique perspective to the discussions, by exploring the reproduction and effects of discursive processes of denial and silencing in young people's everyday lives in terms of how they construct their identity and recognise and talk about racism. The book importantly draws attention to how black young people are positioned, marginalised and held accountable in different ways to their white peers. It has been particularly important to address the issues with young adults because the young have been imagined as the potential future of multiculture and have become a key focus in current policy guidance on integration. For many people, there remains a sense of unease and anxiety about negotiating race and race talk.
