ABSTRACT

For crimes of urbanisation inquiry to pay dividends, rigorous data collection methods are needed. To that end, this chapter sets out a systematic approach for collecting data pertinent to understanding and theorising the crimes of urbanisation. It begins by exploring methods for acclimatising to the field environment, before setting out key documentary sources that can feed the analytical tools presented in chapter two. When considering documentary sources, an emphasis is placed on locating, reading and storing the relevant data. Attention then turns to relevant methods for handling sensitive oral sources and conducting field experiments.
