ABSTRACT
Sometimes when performing in a realistic play on a proscenium stage actors allow the conceit of the 'fourth wall' to limit their performance to the confines of the stage alone, as if they have lost all awareness that people are out there in the auditorium watching. By 'sharing' the play author do not mean that you should break the fourth-wall illusion and start talking directly to the audience when it is not called for in the script. Because of this it can be argued that there is never really a 'fourth wall', even in the most naturalistic of plays. Just remember that these plays, like all plays, are more about people trying to survive in that society than about how fluently they substitute diphthongal changes. A word about the southern accent: if we are cast in a play by Tennessee Williams it is not necessary to push the twang.
