ABSTRACT

The adventure learning instructor is like an orchestral conductor, establishing the limits, expectations and guidelines for the experience. The instructor plays a critical role in the success of an adventure learning session. Participants can feel particularly close to an adventure learning instructor, as they share a seemingly hazardous activity or a remote location, resulting in emotional safety that does not depend upon threat and intimidation. On a practical level, the instructor has operational responsibilities beyond the control of their leader. The instructor has to supervise the group appropriately, a responsibility that begins at the start of the encounter, which is not necessarily at the adventure venue, but on the journey to reach the venue or perhaps even before. In all instances, instructors must be open and honest with participants about how they will treat revelations and never be drawn into apparent collusion or be seen to condone inappropriate behaviour.
