ABSTRACT

Today, the peripheries of our cities and towns are instead dominated by massive infrastructures of food industries, caused by rise of globalization and high-mileage trading of produce. With over half of Slovenia forested, Exchange brings its inhabitants back to absent tradition of hunting and gathering, and adopts food sovereignty policies to address issues of climate change and food sustainability. The intention is that forest infrastructure gradually extends its footprint; declining and abandoned industrial zones are adapted into wildlife habitats for cultivation of deer and other game. In Slovenia in years gone by, it was common for populace to hunt wild boar, chamois, deer, mouflon and other fauna that thrive within local forests. The Exchange promotes sustainable management of the forests and innovative solutions to help resolve forest-use conflicts that can arise between rural and urban communities. The Hunter-Gatherers Exchange embodies a very locavore culture – a reminder that nature's landscapes can be an infrastructure for urban resilience and adaptation strategy.
