ABSTRACT

This chapter analyses the paradigm or framework of traditional learning analytics that has created many of the ethical issues it is now encountering. It describes the issues from an emergent feedback perspective and show how many of the ethical issues are dampened in an emergent feedback organization. Ethical issues are identified as one of the most significant challenges associated with learning analytics. A recent economic downturn is placing immense pressure on the whole higher education sector and despite its reputation, Cape Southern is experiencing a significant reduction in demand for places in its freshman class. The representatives of the office of learning analytics express their appreciation for the feedback and ask the executive to approve a working party to build an ethical charter for learning analytics at Cape Southern. The core ethical dilemma faced by the field of learning analytics has its origins in the disconnect between its data and the data required to optimize learning.
