ABSTRACT

This chapter explains the theme and propositions developed throughout the book to map a change trajectory for learning analytics. It describes a matrix of organizational transformations required to become an emergent feedback organization (EFO) and the way the field of learning analytics can be an agent for change in progressing transformation. The chapter also describes the consequences of a black-box understanding of learning and teaching and the way those consequences are debilitating for the fields of education and learning analytics. Understanding the paradigm crisis faced by education helps to clarify the challenge of learning analytics. The term black box represents the inability of the field of education to understand and professionally control its practice at scale. The field of learning analytics can be an agent for change in education, creating the conditions necessary for an emergent feedback approach. Standardized testing regimes are a logical consequence of a black-box approach to education.
