ABSTRACT

China looms large in the perceptions of India and South Korea. The national interests of India and South Korea in their looming neighbour sometimes smiling, sometimes frowning reveal several differences and similarities. This chapter explains the interactions of India and South Korea with China over the next decade in the broader context of South Asia and Northeast Asia, and the presence of the United States in both these regions. The value of the Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa (BRICS) association to address Sino Indian concerns was noticed, while the limitations of economics to manage political differences, multilateralism to erode regional tensions and the significance of domestic constraints were also considered. China is likely to overtake the US sometime between 2017 and 2027, with India following a decade or two later to become the second largest economy. Asia's economy is expected to be larger than that of the US and European Union (EU) combined by 2030.
