ABSTRACT

This introduction presents an overview of key concepts discussed in the subsequent chapters of this book. The book proposes people to collaborate with other student-directors on group exercises. The core action should be based on the director's understanding or interpretation of the text, but it can emphasize whatever elements the director finds central to his or her vision. Collaborative directors can support and challenge their ensemble members to contribute greatly to the process yet keep them on track toward a larger vision. The book examines the exercises to encourage them to develop script analysis skills and experiment with different solutions to a variety of directing problems, working with your group to explore physical, aural, and visual elements of staging. It focuses on how to use analysis as the basis for collaboration, as a springboard for opening the play to several interpretations rather than a method of narrowing those interpretations and the choices that may be used to achieve them.
