ABSTRACT

This opening chapter considers the way in which poetry has been part of our lifestyle and heritage through the ages. It is important therefore that we do not neglect this important part of our literary heritage in our planning for children's learning. Even before birth babies become aware of sound patterns of music and speech and it is vital that we stimulate them from their earliest days by sharing lullabies, songs, rhymes and poetry. The chapter quotes the three prime areas of learning and the four specific areas of learning for the Early Years Foundation Stage and illustrates how poetry can be an integral part of these learning experiences.
