■ A week after the 9/11 attacks, a strange development occurred. Five anthrax-laced envelopes were mailed to major media outlets in New York City. Three weeks later, two anthrax-laden envelopes were sent to the offices of two U.S. senators. The anthrax-laden materials ultimately killed five people, caused 17 others to become sick, and led to widespread national panic.
