ABSTRACT

Most audio synthesis is developed from a view of sound as a combination of sinusoidal frequency partials. There are a number of reasons for this:

• The conventional analysis techniques for determining the constitution of sounds are based on Fourier Transform methods, which produce results related to sinusoidal partials, as described in Chapter 4. These methods are well understood, and are suitable not only for analysis, but are also related to frequency domain modification techniques (Chapter 12) and sinusoidal additive synthesis (Chapter 16).
