ABSTRACT

From the investigation of reproductive processes we know how it can happen that the sight of an apple can perhaps remind us of a stay in the country or, to put it more exactly, can arouse in us the image of that residence in the country. The sight of the visible apple does not awake the image of another apple which was seen at that time, and the image of this other apple does not, in turn, arouse the related images of the earlier perceived apple's environment; but, rather, the perceived apple brings the whole memory image directly into consciousness, for, according to the general law, an image has the tendency to complete itself to form a whole image. The reproductive process, to be sure, is explained by this, but the memory performance is not, for each memory operation signifies that I recognize the reproduced image as my earlier experience. Besides explaining the renewal of images, we must also explain why the reproduced image appears as my experience, and why it appears as my earlier experience.
