ABSTRACT

The Froebelian approach is to focus on developing internal and autonomous self-discipline rather than behaviour management, which is about external control through rewards. The child’s journey into self-discipline is integrated into the partnership with parents. Behaviour and how children should be disciplined has always been a concern of parents and teachers alike. The practitioners learnt how to support parents in helping their children to develop self-discipline. The Froebelian approach focuses on developing internal and autonomous self-discipline rather than behaviour management, which is about external control through rewards. This links deeply with the development of a moral code and values through childhood and into adulthood, which was one of the most important aspects of Froebel’s educational framework. The child’s journey into self-discipline is integrated into the partnership with parents. Patterns of family organisation and structure differ in different parts of the world, and also within communities and countries.
