ABSTRACT

The bioregionalist approach can contribute to the creation of harmony between the construction sector and other activities within the complex scenario of contemporary society, according to eco-sustainability and the European Union (EU) 2020 package. The bioregion is a geographical zone that presents not only a continuity in terms of hydrology, land-shape, flora, fauna, and other natural characteristics, but also some common aspects regarding culture, constructive traditions, human, and economic resources. The introduction of the bioregionalism movement in Europe and the comprehension of its cultural evolution could work as an aid to sustainable decisions for city regeneration. Bioregionalism in Italy is strongly related to the cultural identity of a place and it has been in existence for years, among a great number of networks, such as the Italian Bioregional Network. An example of a bioregionalist approach can be found in the ancient architecture and urban development of the Mediterranean basin.
