ABSTRACT
It has been emphasized in preceding chapters that development is essentially concerned with the prospects of individuals in the process of social change. Those chapters have thus concentrated on how to improve those prospects for the individual, irrespective of whether he lives in the rural or the urban areas of a country. In spatial terms, it was shown that this involves the creation of structures which improve the competitiveness of individuals in terms of their access to and command over societal resources. A necessary corollary of competition and its resultant tendency towards specialization is, however, coordination and integration. In this section, therefore, the concern is how a country may achieve effective integration of the various new structures that are being created in the development process.
