Knowledge and competence with operations means that children not only understand the meaning of operations but also understand the relationship between operations and can use the properties to manipulate numbers. Foundational knowledge is the beginning number sense that children develop in the early grades and then continue to build on through elementary school. Finally, number sense means being able to combine the understanding of numbers and operations in order to apply this understanding to solve problems. Children enter kindergarten with many different skills and understandings in math. In kindergarten, rather than a formal study of geometry, children are invited to describe the objects in their environment using names of shapes and describe the positions of the objects. This is when we pull out our pattern blocks and allow children to explore shapes, attributes, and relationships. Some children immediately catch on to using names to describe shapes and positions, while others struggle.
