Supporting Understanding of Fractions book
Every year Sarah dreads teaching fractions. It is especially challenging with the new Common Core. Sarah understands the focus on conceptual understanding and the use of number lines, but she fi nds that her students are struggling with comparing the fractions using a number line, especially fractions such as 32 and
that they are struggling so much because they don’t really understand what a fraction is and how fractions are used in real life. She makes these connections to real life in class but she wishes her students could continue to make connections outside of school.
