ABSTRACT
Remember Raymond? Here is a young man working two jobs, attending school, and participating in a summer program with other teens to address concerns they have about their peers and their neighborhood. Now think about his English teacher. It’s easy enough to think about her critique of Raymond’s writing-and her denial of his own assertion of being a writer-as a denial of his agency, as a refusal to recognize his capabilities, abilities, and informed purposeful choices.
