ABSTRACT

Mahin, an Arab American and, at the time, a pre-service teacher, wrote about a discussion she witnessed in a local classroom in Missouri (rendered here as written):

The students in a combined AP U.S History and English class, were all juniors, and most were white. There were probably about three Black students, and three Asians in the group of almost forty students. All semester long snippets of conversation could be heard from one black girl, in particular, that applied to her situation as a student of color, in an AP class:

• White people are surprised that my parents push me to get good grades, as if grades are not a priority to black parents! • There are only three black people in this class, yet we’re all over the school.
