ABSTRACT
The results of the process analyses are reconceptualized here by defining the component parts of the rupture mechanism which explain the outbreak of institutional conflict. The mechanism is placed within a broader family of similar crisis mechanisms in IR and EU studies and in a discussion which re-engages with different theories on institutional conflict and change. This family of crisis mechanisms is ordered in a typology that helps define the different assumptions regarding the institutions and agents on which they rely.
