ABSTRACT

Johan Galtung's theory has been very influential in modern peace education. The crucial point to be understood is that it is a theory pursuing a positive utopia because it seeks to implement positive peace – and this is the case even if we understand that positive peace is to be achieved by an enduring process of peacebuilding. The idea is that peace is not the negation and suppression of conflict, and perhaps of violence; rather, peace is a state that alternates that of conflict, and perhaps that of violence. The chapter argues that Gur-Ze'ev's position entails a more pragmatic approach to peace education, one that acknowledges that conflict is part and parcel of reality – this is Gur-Ze'ev pedagogy of peace. It demonstrates hat he questions the very foundations of modern peace education, arguing that peace education, as it stands, can be a new and effective form of normalising education.
