ABSTRACT

This chapter introduces the archetypal regions, positions, trajectories and dynamics of Bi-relational Development (BirD). BirD is a theory of onto-epistemological development that is relevant to the recognition and (re)solution of wicked problems. The chapter explication of BirD, the following section offers some general metaphors that highlight some important aspects of a bi-relational approach to onto-epistemological development. The chapter briefs hypothetical illustration of one onto-epistemological trajectory preempts the more authentic illustrations of bi-relational development. The chapter divided into seven sections that include: visual and symbolic representations of BirD's archetypal regions, positions, trajectories and dynamics; definitions and explications of archetypal regions; a brief description of the drivers of development; definitions of key bi-relational dynamics; a conceptual tool for mapping bi-relational trajectories; a hypothetical illustration of bi-relational development; and some common metaphors for understanding bi-relational development. Collectively, these sections establish a basis for the illustrations and educational applications of BirD found.
